An interesting and unique way of exploring Mt Piana, the iconic battlefield of the First World War in the Dolomites. If you are interested in history, flora and photography this is the hike that suits you. The hiking route is suitable for kids as well, we explore military paths, barracks and observatory positions, in one of the best well preserved WWI open air museum of the Dolomites. A journey back in history, to understand the strategic importance and the role played by the Dolomites a century ago, but also the opportunity to enjoy one of the best panoramas of the whole region.
Our walk starts from Rifugio Bosi, 2200 metres, reachable by private shuttle from Misurina. From Rifugio Bosi we follow gentle military wide gravel roads and mountain paths across the southern and northern plateau of Mt Piana, along Italian and Austrian military positions and trenches, set only a few metres apart, understanding the strategical importance of this mountain during WWI. Longer options available, starting from Misurina on foot and climbing up to the plateau through Forcella dei Castrati, and descending on foot all the way to Misurina along the military road that used to connect the plateau to the important military base located in the village.
